About Kathleen

Kathleen finally considers herself a “real” New Yorker since she’s lived here for more than 20 years, but she has also lived in several other parts of the United States.  After a childhood in rural Arkansas, she received her Bachelor’s degree from Grinnell College in Iowa, where she studied English literature. She came to New York in 1993 where, after years in widely-varying positions (e.g., personal assistant to an advertising guru, IT at a movie company and several large law firms), she finally decided to return to her first loves: reading and teaching.  Kathleen subsequently earned her Master’s degree in both General Education and Literacy Specialty at Bank Street College of Education, and she has been working as a teacher and literacy specialist in Brooklyn since 2006.  She also a consults as a reading and learning specialist for Greene Hill School in Fort Greene.

Both Kathleen and her spouse are avid readers of all kinds of books and periodicals, from Julia Child and Jane Austen to the world of Marvel comics, Gone with the Wind and The Bluest Eye.  She is a life-member of the Jane Austen Society of North America.

As you might have seen on her Contact page, she is in the Kensington area of Brooklyn where she shares a quiet, sunny apartment with her spouse (a certified middle- and high-school math teacher) and two friendly felines.  In this apartment there are many books, including an entire full-sized set of the Oxford English Dictionary which she received for Valentine’s Day.
